It's been a busy and interesting start to the new year. I've started a new job this year and that is working out very well so far. I'm doing pretty much exactly what I enjoy doing and I don't have a phone. If things keep up this way, I'll be a very happy person.
The other day I got my shipment from quietpc.ca
. I ordered up a sound dampening kit
case fan, a big zalman cpu cooler, and a power adapter to connect fans to at 5v so that they don't spin so fast (and thus are less noisy). My first attempt was to quiet my Athlon XP 2000+ system down which was in my little Antec Aria
case. My biggest problem was keeping the damn thing cool, and in that little case it required alot of air flow with small fans. After installing all the sound dampening it improved a little but was still rather loud. So I got fed up and when and bought another Antec Sonata
case which is both quiet and easy to work with. It turns out I couldn't fit my new Zalman cpu cooler onto the athlon because the motherboard didn't have the proper mounting holes on the board (which I didn't realize I needed before hand). So I ended up digging out my old Zalman flower cooler which I had from long ago and used it. It made a giant difference and the cpu stays alot cooler than before with very little noise at all. My second goal was to quiet my HTPC system which is a little Epia M10000
system. I installed it in the Antec Aria
case which was all sound dampened but was still my loudest system because of the tiny cpu fan. I took the cpu fan off and installed the ultra quiet case fan I got and just placed it overtop of the ram/cpu/chipset and it keeps the cpu cool enough that way with almost no noise at all. The system is quiet enough now that I can't tell if it's on or off without checking to see if there is air being pushed out the back or not. So all my systems are quiet now and I can think again...
I also signed up with zip.ca
at the start of the new year after being introduced to it from a friend at work. It's a pretty slick system for renting dvd's, and so far has been really great. You just pay a flat monthly fee and they ship you 4 dvd's at a time. Once your done you ship them back, and they send you more. All the shipping is pre paid so there is no extra costs and the shipping time is about 2 days so things move pretty quickly.
There were a couple of other things I was going to mention but I've forgotten now. Oh well... It couldn't have been that important anyways :)
