I've been thinking about buying one of these for a long time now to take care of the aquarium maintenace that I was doing with a long series of buckets. It was a long tedious process and finally drove me mad when I spilt some water on a monitor I had near the aquarium and nuked it. So I ordered this up from mops.ca
and just recieved it here today. It works like a charm and well worth the money if your doing any type of aquarium maintenace (especially if you have a large tank). They're website
is very retro seeing as the last revised date is April 21 1998, but in it's own way that is pretty leet :)

I finally got around to getting some more fish for the new tank. Went out and purchased 3 yellow labido's and added them into the 75 gallon tank. I was interested to see how our jeweled cichlid would act with others in the tank, and so far it seems to be going very well. I've read alot of horror stories about them being very agressive fish, but ours seems very friendly as is out and about swimming with the yellow labidos. I took a few pictures as usual:
I also purchased a Nutrafin CO2 Natural Plant System
for the tank to help with plant growth. I had setup a system once before with a 2L coke bottle and some tubing. It worked really well at that time, and I'm hoping this one will as well. It being a commercial product looks much better and is probably a little more efficent then what I had made.

I picked up a few more ghost shrimp yesterday evening to help speed along the cleaning of the tank. The interesting thing about this is that one of the ghost shrimp is carrying eggs (as seen below). I'm interested to see how that turns out and if any of the baby shrimp actually survive or not...

I finally got around to buying a new aquarium as I've been wanting to do for the past year or so. I picked up a 75 Gallon tank and have had it up and running for a few weeks now. I moved the jeweled cichlid I have into the new tank and began to cycle the tank. I started having some issues with brown algae, but from what I read that is quite normal in a new tank that is cycling. However recently I've had the emergance of green hair algae which isn't very much fun to deal with at all. It grows on just about everything and looks awful. So I've employeed about 20 ghost shrimp to feast on the algae and moved the jeweled cichlid back to the old tank for the time being (as the jeweled would most certainly eat the shrimp). Things seem to be going well so far and the shrimp are eating up the algae rather quickly. I took a few pictures as well:
Also if anyone is interested you can find more information about ghost shrimp from the following site:

I did some rearanging of the fish tank a couple of days ago things seems to be going much better for the fish now. He isn't nearly as frightened as he was before and is out about in the tank alot more now. He is still a little scared every once in a while and hides in his new cave but usually only for a few seconds until he is back out and checking whats going on. He is also eating much better too which is a positive sign.

My single fish seemed to be doing alright after the move and everything but lately has been hidding almost all of the time and seems very scared. I'm not sure what the problem is as I can't pinpoint when it started happening exactly or what might have caused it. He hides under this one rock pretty much all of the time now and seems to only come out in the evening. When he does wander the tank in the evening he doesn't seem scared at all either which is the strange part. This has been happening for over a week now and at first I thought it might just be a temporary thing...

Seeing as I got rid of one of the fishes today I thought I'd post a couple pictures (and test how some pictures will look in the blog layout).
The image quality isn't very good as my camera doesn't do so well in low light and especially not with moving fish. I managed to catch one of the fish yawning in the picture on the left. Unfortunately the background is the heater. The fish on the right is the one that is back at the petstore now.

Well I've had two Jeweled Cichlids (Hemichromis bimaculatus)
, in my tank for the past month or so. Lately they have started fighting as one of them claimed the tank as his territory. With the tank being only 20 Gal, there isn't enough room for both of them so today we'll be sending the bully back to the store so that the other can live in peace. I was hoping for a male/female but it looks like they are both males. Unfortunately it seems pretty much impossible to tell the sex when they are small. The other fish seems somewhat stressed but I think he will do ok once he isn't being chased around the tank. I've piled a whole bunch of rocks in the tank but it has only slowed the chasing.
